If the World’s Budgets Were Banknotes – How Many Cities Would They Cover?

Government budgets are made of numbers so huge, they’re almost impossible to imagine – trillions upon trillions. But what if we tried to visualize them in a tangible way, using $100 bills? Let’s spread them flat on the ground, side by side, and see how much of a city they could cover.

United States – About $6.5 Trillion

That’s 65 billion $100 bills. If spread out, they would cover an area of about 672 km².
How big is that?

  • About 13 times the size of Tel Aviv.
  • 11 times the entire island of Manhattan.
  • Roughly 200 times New York’s Central Park.
In other words – America’s budget could blanket the entire Tel Aviv metropolitan area in a shimmering green layer of dollars.

China – About $4.9 Trillion

China holds one of the world’s largest budgets. 49 billion $100 bills laid out would cover about 507 km².

  • Almost 5 times the size of Paris (105 km²).
  • Roughly equal to the inner city of Los Angeles.
The Chinese budget could literally drown an entire European capital in dollar bills.

Japan – About $2.8 Trillion

Japan, the world’s third-largest economy, has a massive budget – though still modest compared to the U.S. and China. Spread out, its bills would cover about 290 km².

  • 5.5 times the size of Manhattan.
  • Almost half the size of Singapore (728 km²).

Germany – About $2 Trillion

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, runs on a budget of about $2 trillion – or 207 km² of $100 bills.

  • 4 times the size of Tel Aviv.
  • Twice the area of Washington, D.C.

So, What Did We Learn?

Budgets may look like abstract numbers, but when visualized physically, we see just how enormous they really are. The U.S. alone covers half a county, China lays down enough to blanket a European metropolis, Japan spreads across a whole metro area, and Germany easily fills a capital city.

Big money doesn’t just fill budgets – it could literally cover entire cities!
